Workshop - Arusha

About CCF:

The first Lines of Grey project, began as a photography experiment at the Children for Children’s Future (CCF) center in Arusha. CCF was established in Arusha, Tanzania to address the needs of the ever-increasing number of children living on the streets. It is a registered organization under the Societies Ordinance according to the law of Tanzania, No. SO.8203.

Who are street children?
The term street children refer to children for whom the street more than their family has become their real home. It includes children who might not necessarily be homeless or without families, but who live in situations where there is no protection, supervision, or direction from responsible adults. Information about Street Children in Tanzania
Background:

Children under 15 constitute about 46% of the population. There has been an increase in street children numbers since the early 1990s due to the impact of poverty on households and the effect of HIV/AIDS. In a 2000 survey by Mkombozi, 22% of children migrating to the streets was the result of school exclusion linked to inability to pay school fees.

Causes and Challenges:
Widespread poverty impacting on rural-urban migration; closure of large farms on Mt Kilimanjaro resulting in widespread unemployment; family breakdown; dehumanisation, criminalisation and politicisation of street children; lack of non-formal education opportunities; difficulties of providing street children with opportunities to support themselves in formal employment; traditional views of children as property; traditional nonintervention in family violence; inadequate juvenile justice system and lack of mechanisms to document and report police abuses; few organisations specialising full-time in street children.
